Discovery of Self

We’ve been distant from ourselves—today, it’s time to meet our true self. Today, we set out in search of who we really are. – Preeti.

No single definition of self-discovery can fully capture the essence of understanding oneself and knowing who one is. It’s something unique to each individual, shaped by how they think and what they understand. Yes, it’s rightly said: no one can know you better than you know yourself. However, this journey requires honesty with yourself.

I believe self-discovery isn’t just about knowing your likes and dislikes, your favourite colour, or favourite food. It’s much deeper than that. In my own journey of self-discovery, I’ve come to understand that while knowing our likes and dislikes is important, it’s equally essential to explore the deeper world within us.

It’s a process of recognising our self-worth, acknowledging our emotions, and understanding our personality with complete honesty toward ourselves.

And truly, this discovery isn’t limited to a one-time realisation. In my view, it’s a lifelong process. As life unfolds and circumstances change, it becomes vital to reflect on how adaptable our perspective is to those changes.

Yes, this journey has many layers, like understanding how important self-discovery is in our lives and what kind of impact it has on us personally.

Aware of yourself: Recognising your worth, this awareness means becoming conscious of your feelings, your emotions, and even the thoughts within you. It’s about reflecting on how you receive and process things others say to you, whether good or bad. How do their words affect you? How deeply do you understand them?

And when that understanding comes, instead of simply reacting, you choose to work on yourself. That is what self-awareness is all about.

True to yourself: In this journey, it’s so important to accept your own truth. For example, if someone is very emotional, they should acknowledge it. If someone gets angry often, instead of hiding it, they need to accept it. The idea is to accept yourself as you are.

And it’s also true that just knowing your flaws doesn’t mean you truly know yourself or that you’re being true to yourself. Accepting the truth of who you are—your strengths, your flaws, your emotions—is essential. And if you feel there’s something you’d like to work on, even if it’s a flaw, then definitely go ahead and work on it.

Understanding One’s Reason for Being: Once acceptance becomes part of the self-discovery journey—once you begin to understand your truth—then surely the purpose of your existence, the goal of your life, also starts to become clear. You could say that to truly understand yourself

To understand the purpose of your life, you must become your own guide, your own wise teacher.” – Preeti.

And in my view, becoming your own mentor and showing yourself the path forward is the very reason for your existence. That’s when you truly realise your own worth.

When you’ve done this kind of inner work on yourself, there’s bound to be a result. Let’s understand its impact:

It strengthens your identity: When you come to know yourself in every way and learn how to focus inward, your sense of self naturally becomes stronger. You begin to feel truly good within, and you’re able to bring happiness not just to others—but also to yourself.
Feels contentment: When instead of shaping our life around others’ expectations and directions, we become our own mentor through self-discovery and draft our life accordingly—believe me, there comes a deep sense of contentment. A quiet joy in knowing, “Yes, this is who I am.” Because this version of you is the result of your own search within, and you’ve given shape to your life’s true purpose.

Feels More Confident: This often involves reflection, journaling, meditation, and even confronting painful truths. Consider tapping into your inner compass to help you navigate life with greater clarity and confidence.

Essence:

Every person’s path to self-discovery is different. Not everyone will find the same resonance in what I’ve written here. I’ve written about my personal journey of self-discovery. Every individual’s ideas, comprehension, and viewpoint are crucial to this journey.
Every self-discovery journey, however, must have one thing in common: always be honest with yourself. Only then will this journey conclude in its actual and significant conclusion.

It is not always simple; at times, it resembles a misty forest. However, each new understanding you acquire is like a lantern that illuminates the way ahead a bit more clearly. -Preeti
